The Shadiest Celebrity Tweets Of All Time

We live for the celebrity drama that Twitter brings to our daily feed. Watching these feuds play out live via out mobile devices gives us life. It’s what inspired the creation of Throwing Shade, our new party game.

But before we get to that, let’s take a look at some of the driest, most disrespectful and downright deadly celebrity shade you’ll find on anywhere Twitter...

Rihanna

Who better to kick off with than the queen of clap backs, Rihanna. The “Run This Town” singer is renowned for laying waste to anyone that dares to dice with her on social media. That’s probably why they call her Bad Gal Riri.

There are so many examples of Rihanna throwing shade on Twitter, it’s hard to pick out just one. But we’ve gone for this particularly blunt and salty response to a fairly innocent and innocuous tweet from Kendall Jenner…

Ouch. 🤕

Kim Kardashian

Much like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian is no stranger to taking aim at her fellow celebrities over social media. Her victims include Drake, Bette Midler (also on this list) and her own family members.

In 2016, Kim caught singer Taylor Swift in her Twitter crosshairs, delivering a not-so-cryptic tweet that prompted her fans to troll Swift with a menagerie of snake emojis…

Apparently, it all dated back to the 2009 VMA-related feud between Swift and Kanye West. Wait a minute, wasn’t Swift the victim in that one… ??

Hillary Clinton

We know Hillary Clinton is a tough lady. Her lengthy career in politics and marriage to Bill Clinton is proof of that. Both have clearly armed her with the sort of skills that make throwing weapons-grade shade a piece of cake.

In the lead-up to the 2016 election, Hillary needed just three simple words to hand out some super humbling whoop-sass to the soon-to-be US President Donald Trump…

With a response like this, you wonder how she never went on to become the first female leader.

Pink

Pink isn’t known for mincing her words. So it’s no surprise she’s got a history of throwing shade on Twitter. And this tweet is from so long ago it's almost ancient history. But like Cher, good shade doesn't age...

It's almost flawless it its execution. No need for curse words or name calling. Just some well-crafted vintage shade. Bravo, Pink! 👏 👏 👏

Ellen Degeneres

We were given a glimpse into Ellen Degeneres’ dark side following revelations about the “toxic atmosphere” associated with her talk show in 2020. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she can be shady on her socials, too.

This one wasn’t aimed at an individual, though. Instead, Ellen had a playful and topical tech-themed dig at Sony in relation to the production problems with the PS5. And we thought it was pretty funny as well being as shady AF…

John Cleese

One for the older generation, John Cleese, of Monty Python and Fawlty Towers fame, is another Twitter uses that chooses to say it exactly how it is. And that attitude and an apparent dislike for Piers Morgan (who doesn’t) culminated in this 2015 tweet at the more blunt end of the shade scale…

The notoriously thin-skinned Morgan couldn’t let Cleese have the last word, though.

He responded in typical self-promoting style by linking back to his original Daily Mail column that kicked the whole nasty business off in the first place. And the cycle of shade continues…

Bette Midler

Sticking with the older demographic, Bette Midler has been around long enough to tangle with anyone in a war of words and come out on top. She’s taken aim at Kim Kardashian, Caitlyn Jenner and Joe Biden in the past.

But this particular tweet aimed at Justin Bieber made us lol…

It never really strayed too far from good-natured banter. Bieber responded by saying, “This Britt Meddler. I don’t even know who that is.” That, in turn, inspired an @BrittMeddler spoof account. And we were living for it as long as it lasted.

Kanye West

Now this one is either one of the finest and driest examples of shade you’ll find on Twitter, or it’s a man transmitting his honest and innermost monologue to his millions of followers. Because we love Kanye, we're giving him the benefit of the doubt. It's Ye after all…

Kanye West IKEA tweet

OK, OK... IKEA is beloved by millions. So it’s highly likely Ye was being honest. But let’s say he wasn’t - doesn’t that make this tweet absolutely devastating??

Rihanna

On Twitter, she truly is the shadiest of the shady. So it makes sense we should give her the last word on this list. Especially when it involves such a blunt sweary response to criticism from MTV…

Rihanna MTV tweet response

Getting such a heavy slap down is embarrassing enough for MTV. But the reason why we love this one so much is that it comes from a BlackBerry - that’s how you know it’s some retrograde shade.

If you live for shade like we do, you should check out Throwing Shade, our brand new, hilariously insulting party game. It’s a “Who’s most likely to” that rewards you for being shady to your friends.
